Overview The first Toyota Vios made its debut in Thailand back in late 2002. It was developed as the successor of the Soluna, the Southeast Asian version of the subcompact Tercel sedan which was never offered in the Philippine market. As the Corolla morphed into the larger Altis, this opened up some room for a sub-Corolla model in the local market. Toyota Motor Philippines launched the first gen Vios in 2003; this replaced the aging 1.3-liter variants of the Corolla. Thanks to its popularity, by 2007 the Japanese brand’s smallest sedan was being manufactured locally. In 2018, some fifteen years after the first model landed on our shores, Toyota introduced the latest iteration of its Vios. While the platform is largely carried over, the new Toyota Vios receives a completely redesigned body with a design language shared with its five-door sibling, the Yaris. Up front it gets a split grille flanked by longer swept-back headlights. It receives vertical foglight housings and a larger lower grille. Moving on to the sides, it features more dramatic body creases in place of its predecessor’s single character line. At the back it gets slim vertical taillights reminiscent of those found in other new Toyota models. While not too obvious, its C-pillars now flow smoothly into the rear trunk.

Turning Head for Every Exhaust One of the habits that bugs my friends the most is that I can never stay focused looking at them whenever we’re talking. Unless we’re in a soundproof bunker I’m like a kid in a candy store getting distracted by every minor exhaust note I hear. Almost always it’s a plain jane Civic with a fart pipe, but I still get excited. This constant hope in the midst of so much disappointment may mean you’re an auto enthusiast. Trait 2. Can list all the Luxury Rides on Every Drive Are you often able to recite a list of your 10 favorite cars that you saw on the drive to get a gallon of milk? Or better yet, do you recognize neighbors and people based on what they drive? When I had a commute, I was pretty predictable on my leaving time and had a whole host of random people that I recognized solely based on their cars. I’m not talking just the nice ones either. Everyone can notice the Ferrari, a real fan keeps track of that Chevy nova that keeps cutting you off every Monday. If this sounds like you, sorry mate, you’re probably on the spectrum. Trait 3. Remember Acquaintances Based on their Cars You know all those people you meet at the mixer for the kid’s school event or that work holiday party. They might be around enough to where you have to recognize them but don’t spend a lot of time with them. If you ask “is that the one with the M3” to determine who is who, you’re probably a auto nut.

BMW is the undisputed market leader in luxury vehicles in the Philippines. But while they tend to do excellently sales-wise, they don’t offer the same leadership when it comes to creature comfort features. The foundations—the engine and platform—all tend to be solid, but they fall short when it comes to things that customers actually touch and feel like the trimmings and accruements. That’s all changed with the 2022 BMW 5 Series. In an ingenious move, BMW has decided to source the sedan from Malaysia. With that, less of the price tag went to excise taxes and shipping charges; more went in the way of leveling up the equipment and features. Finally, BMW’s executive sedan comes out of the gate in fighting form. It’s certainly elevated itself—buyers need not just buy it for the badge as it’s now truly great value as well. It's hard to believe that the current generation 5 Series, codenamed the G30, has been around since 2017. Five years is an eternity in the automotive world so it’s right time for BMW to give it its mid-cycle refresh. For this update, there’s nothing out of the ordinary. Upfront, it sees a larger twin-kidney grille which because of the extra width and height, necessitated a new front bumper design. Sandwiching the grille are new LED headlights that now incorporate an adaptive cornering function and automatic high beams. At each corner are 18-inch alloys with run-flat tires, and at the back are new taillight graphics and a rear bumper with square tailpipe cutouts. The 2022 5 Series’ heightened sense of luxury starts with the doors, or more specifically, how they close. No need to slam them shut, as a soft-close mechanism “sucks” them in. The steering wheel also automatically tilts up easing entry into the seats. Then, there’s the seat covering itself. Typically, premium brands in the Philippines are guilty of sticking with synthetic material for their multi-million-peso offerings. Not here as the standard Dakota leather’s the real deal. It’s not as luxurious as, say, the X7’s Merino Leather, but because of its heavy finish, it’s also much more durable. The same can be said about the highlight trim which is real metal in Pearl Chrome and real open-pored ash trunkwood.

In my recent review of the 2022 Trailblazer, I happen to call the Trax a “potato on stilts.” Seems Chevrolet’s realized that their smallest crossover needed a glow-up and so, here it is: the all-new, re-imagined 2024 Trax. Known as the Seeker in China, the 2024 Trax gets the same sort of muscular styling pioneered by Chevrolet’s Blazer. At the front, the use of horizontal lines emphasizes width complete with LED lighting elements. It also sits 101 mm lower than the current model giving it a stronger profile. Wheel sizes range from 16s to 18s. The platform, Chevrolet says is all new and it stretches the Trax’s wheelbase by some 152 mm. This results in a much larger interior room—up 279 mm in length and 51 mm in width—compared to its predecessor. Rear legroom alone has grown some 76 mm, while cargo volume is up nearly 12 percent. The enlarged interior volume is complemented by the new design which is centered around giving a “lightweight feel” for a sense of airiness. The instrument panel cowl has been lowered and together with other Chevrolet “performance” design cues like the rounded air vents make it look sportier. When it comes to safety, coming in as standard are automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and automatic high beams. Other functionalities such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot indicators, and rear parking assist are optional extras. Chevrolet says the all-new Trax is set to go on sale in North America by early 2023. Given that Chevy Philippines has already brought in the China-sourced Tracker for the local market, it makes sense for them to fill in the gap between the Tracker and Trailblazer with the Trax/Seeker. Of course, it’s just a matter of what it will be called when it gets here.

What is a Hybrid Car? A hybrid car is a vehicle with at least one electric motor paired with a gasoline engine. Because it has two power sources, a hybrid car can choose which one is more efficient in a given driving condition. If you run out of battery, this vehicle will revert to a conventional parallel hybrid. Mild hybrids can’t run on electricity alone, but their electric motor still assists the gasoline engine. A car that looks like it belongs on the streets of Gotham is set to be the fastest in the world. New Zealand automaker Rodin has just unveiled its plans for 'FZERO', a hypercar that is set to be unmatched by any other on the time charts, according to the firm. Its name, FZERO, is a play on the fact that David Dicker, the founder of the company, had set out to build a car faster than Formula One automobiles. The FZERO is said to be unbounded by road regulations or racing regulations. It will be meant solely for use on the track and will not be used as a championship car. The car will be made entirely from carbon fibre and weigh just 1,539 pounds - 220 pounds lighter than F1's current cars for this season. Under the hood rests a four-liter V10 twin-turbo engine weighing just 291 pounds, making it the lightest in the game. The engine is built in-house at Rodin and can go up to 986 brake horsepower and a top speed of upwards of 224 miles per hour. It will have a closed cockpit, and its aerodynamic front claw-like wings and floor will help it achieve an impressive 9,000 pounds of downforce. The motor is currently estimated to cost £1.85 million (US$2.18m). Only 27 will be available for purchase by the summer of 2023.
