Google finally releases massive March update for Pixel devices with new features and bug fixes. Seeing as how the first Monday of the month came and went without Pixel handsets receiving their latest batch of security fixes, it was pretty obvious that Google had something big in the pipeline that required a little more optimization work than usual. That's now evidently done, and the March 2023 update is ready to officially roll out to all eligible Pixel devices in stable form, bringing to the table no less than 46 (!!!) specific bug fixes and general improvements, as well as the first "Feature Drop" of the year packed with cool add-ons designed to make your smartphone or smartwatch "even more helpful and safe than before."

iPhone 15 Ultra: Everything you need to know about Apple’s true flagship Apple is planning a new high-end iPhone loaded with exclusive features coming this fall. We’re still several months away from the unveiling of the iPhone 15, and if the rumors are to be believed, everyone will be talking about one thing: the new Ultra model. Like the Apple Watch Ultra, the iPhone 15 Ultra is rumored to have the best of everything Apple has to offer in an iPhone. As Apple’s largest iPhone, it’ll have a similar feel to the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but everything will be upgraded inside and out. Here’s what we expect from Apple’s first truly new iPhone in years: iPhone 15 Ultra: Release date The one thing we’re absolutely sure of? It’ll arrive this fall, likely in mid-September alongside the rest of the iPhone 15 handsets. There may be a longer delay before the reimagined iPhone Pro Max goes on sale though. As we’ve seen in the past some handsets launch later, such as the iPhone 14 Plus which arrived three weeks after the other iPhone 14-series handsets, and the iPhone 12 mini and 12 Pro Max which arrived three weeks after the rest of that range. iPhone 15 Ultra: Price While the iPhone 14 Pro Max has cost the same $1,099 for the past four years, rumors say the iPhone 15 Ultra will likely bring a price hike. So start saving now, because the iPhone 15 Ultra is likely to be the most expensive iPhone of all time. Several reports have claimed that the iPhone 15 Ultra will have a higher starting price than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, possibly as high as $1,299. iPhone 15 Ultra: Design According to leaked renders, the iPhone 15 Ultra isn’t expected to deviate all that much from the rest of the iPhone 15 lineup. The design of all four models will reportedly be somewhat refined, with slightly curved edges and thinner bezels around the display. But there will reportedly be several design elements that set the iPhone 15 Ultra apart from the rest of the lineup. First and foremost, it will reportedly have a titanium frame instead of stainless steel. Apple has been rumored for years to be working on an iPhone that uses a different material than stainless steel or aluminum, and after the Apple Watch Ultra, it makes sense for Apple to shift to lightweight titanium. Like the Apple Watch Ultra, it’s possible that Apple only offers the iPhone 15 Ultra in a single color to accentuate the difference. It’s also expected to be thicker than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, making it one of the thickest iPhones ever. According to rumors, the iPhone 15 Ultra will be 8.25mm thick compared to 7.85mm on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which will also let Apple trim down the camera bump. The overall dimensions of the phone are expected to be slightly smaller than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, giving the phone a svelter, smaller feel. The buttons are reportedly changing as well. The most recent rumors say Apple will return to a volume rocker rather than individual buttons and reportedly use solid-state buttons with dedicated haptic engines, eliminating the last of the moving parts. The mute switch is also reportedly changing from its long-standing switch to a haptic button.

After playing around with my new iPhone 14 Pro, I quickly realized a couple of things. Yes, the new handset is very flashy, modern and industrial-looking. It is also undeniably faster than my previous iPhone X. But one thing kept bugging me. Namely, that the new device felt almost identical to my half-decade old handset. This got me thinking - if the user's perception of a smartphone does not change across generations, how often should we really upgrade? Especially when we take into account the fact that the average price of high-end smartphones has skyrocketed over the past couple of years. Consequently, I started thinking about another rather controversial term in the tech community - future-proofing. How long can a $1000+ flagship last? I firmly believe that most flagship smartphones are good enough as it is, and the fact that the next generation is better does not make the past one bad in any way. High-end handsets nowadays are expensive because they are built to last. This means that it is no longer a matter of when users have to upgrade, but rather when they want to do so. I clearly remember just how in love I was with the iPhone X when I first bought it more than 5 years ago. It checked all boxes, except one - the ostentatious price tag. I never imagined spending that kind of money on a smartphone. Now, I can confirm it was worth it as even in 2023 the iPhone X proves its immense value.

Why does Apple’s latest music feature have such high system requirements? Apple Music has a new feature called Sing that sounds pretty great. An expansion of the time-synced lyrics feature available in Apple Music, it animates lyrics so you can sing along with precision and lets you adjust the vocal level of the song with a slider depending on how confident you are in your singing. It’s a very slick feature but not everyone will get to use it due to surprisingly high-end system requirements. Other than being an Apple Music subscriber, you’ll need a device from the last few years. Here are the devices that support the new feature: iPhone iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max iPhone 14 Plus iPhone 14 iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max iPhone 13 iPhone 13 mini iPhone 12 Pro/Pro Max iPhone 12 iPhone 12 mini iPhone 11 Pro/Pro Max iPhone 11 iPhone SE (3rd generation and later) iPad iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation and later) iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation and later) iPad Air (4th generation and later) iPad (9th generation and later) iPad mini (6th generation and later) Apple TV Apple TV 4K (2022) Based on that list, the Apple TV 4K from 2021, iPad Pro from 2020, and iPad Air from 2019 aren’t supported. Nor are any Macs. Based on the list, it appears the feature requires an A13 Bionic processor or newer and at least 4GB of RAM and the third-gen neural engine. That eliminates the 2nd-gen iPhone SE, which had an A13 processor but only 3GB of RAM. The Apple TV 4K that launched in 2021 only has an A12 chip.

Huge Foxconn iPhone plant in China rocked by fresh worker unrest Hundreds of workers joined protests at Foxconn’s flagship iPhone plant in China, with some men smashing surveillance cameras and windows, footage uploaded on social media showed. The rare scenes of open dissent in China mark an escalation of unrest at the massive factory in Zhengzhou city that has come to symbolize a dangerous build-up in frustration with the country’s ultra-severe COVID rules as well as inept handling of the situation by the world’s largest contract manufacturer. The trigger for the protests, which began early on Wednesday, appeared to be a plan to delay bonus payments, many of the demonstrators said on livestream feeds. The videos could not be immediately verified by Reuters. “Give us our pay!”, chanted workers surrounded by people in full hazmat suits, some carrying batons, according to footage from one video. Other footage showed tear gas being deployed and workers taking down quarantine barriers. Some workers had complained they were forced to share dormitories with colleagues who had tested positive for COVID-19.

Chinese authorities call on retired soldiers to help Foxconn iPhone plant -SSN SHANGHAI – Local authorities in China’s Henan province are urging retired soldiers and government workers to take on stints at Foxconn‘s iPhone factory in Zhengzhou, the official Shanghai Securities News reported on Tuesday. The plant, the world’s largest iPhone manufacturing facility, has been hit by discontent over government mandated measures to curb the spread of COVID-19, which required the company to isolate many workers but also prompted many others to flee in recent weeks.

China Covid Outbreak To Limit Apple iPhone 14 Pro Availability The consumer electronics giant late Sunday said an iPhone assembly factory in Zhengzhou, China, is "operating at significantly reduced capacity" because of Covid restrictions. The Foxconn-owned factory is the company's primary assembly plant for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, it said. "We continue to see strong demand for iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models," Apple said in a news release. "However, we now expect lower iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max shipments than we previously anticipated and customers will experience longer wait times to receive their new products." The news is "an absolute gut punch for Apple in its most important holiday quarter," Wedbush Securities analyst Daniel Ives said in a note to clients. He estimated that the reduced production could cut Apple's iPhone sales by 3% this quarter. Apple Stock Wavers On Warning "If Zhengzhou remains at lower capacity the next few weeks, this would cause clear iPhone Pro shortages into the all-important Christmas time period, especially in the U.S.," Ives said. On the positive note, the lower-than-expected iPhone sales will be the result of a supply shortage and not demand related, he said. Ives reiterated his outperform rating on Apple stock with a price target of 200. On the stock market today, Apple stock initially fell on the news but ended the regular session up 0.4% to 138.92.

Apple adds Pegatron as new iPhone 14 supplier in India. India and other countries such as Mexico and Vietnam are increasingly turning important to contract manufacturers supplying to American brands amid COVID-related lockdowns in China and simmering tensions between Washington and Beijing.

Should you get an iPhone 14? Yes and no? It’s that time of the year again: iPhone season. Ever since the iPhone 14 lineup went up for sale here in the Philippines, people have been asking those who were lucky enough to be a part of the first batch of iPhone 14 users in the country: “Should I get one?” and “Which one should I get?” The attention is warranted with the 2022 release boasting the best (yet still in ways, a restrained showing) of what Apple has to offer. Presenting the iPhone 14 lineup: There’s the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Here’s a quick, not-so-technical rundown on how the base models (14 and 14 Plus) are different from the Pro models (14 Pro and 14 Pro Max): Display All four phones will more or less give users the same satisfaction of using their smartphones with the Super Retina XDR OLED display. What Apple is selling with its Pro models currently is that it can now brighten up the screen up to 2,000 nits which will make the screens visible under sunlight (a “nit” is a unit of measurement for brightness). A bright screen is something nice to have, definitely. But odds are you won’t be using your phone under the sun often anyway. However, come Summer 2023, Pro model users will have a great time at the beach. Chip This marks the first release where Apple used different chips in its iPhone models of the same series. The base models have the A15 Bionic chip with five-core GPU (which powers last year’s iPhone 13 Pro models). The Pro models have the Apple A16 Bionic chip, which the company claims is “about 40 percent faster than the competition.” The A15 is no slouch and should still be serviceable after years of use, but using a gadget with industry-leading tech like the A16 chip is an absolute pleasure. Cameras The cameras on these phones are one of the biggest talking points every year. Fans of Apple would be happy to learn that all models carry a front camera with autofocus (first time Apple released this) which is perfect for selfies, and the Action mode for its video. According to Apple, Action mode allows users to “capture smooth hand-held video even when you’re moving around a lot.” In theory, you can run along with a friend on a skateboard, and manage to shoot a decent “stabilized” video of him on the streets. Of course, the Pro models carry a big upgrade justifying their markups: They carry a 48-megapixel main camera with an f/1.78 aperture, a 12MP ultrawide camera with an f/2.2 aperture and a 12MP telephoto camera with an f/2.8 aperture. The base models only have a 12MP sensor with an f/1.5 aperture for its main camera and a 12MP ultrawide camera with an f/2.4 aperture. They have no telephoto camera. “Only” is a funny word in this case. The cameras on the base models are still some of the best in the industry. For comparison, the base models this year have similar cameras to one the 13 Pro models last year, except this year has the “Photonic Engine” which is supposed to boost low-light performance. Oh, and the base models do not have the telephoto lens. Should you get an iPhone 14? The number one factor in deciding on whether or not one should go ahead and get an iPhone is price. The iPhone 14s come in different storage capacities (128GB, 256GB, 512GB and an additional tier, 1TB, for the Pro models). The prices start at P56,990 and maxes out to a whopping P102,990 for the 1TB Pro model. Even if one can afford to spend this amount of money, it doesn’t mean these things come cheap. That said, these phones are some of the most luxurious looking, feeling smartphones in the market. If price is not a concern, the next question interested buyers should ask themselves is: “Do I need the latest and greatest?” In time, iPhones have become tools for content creators more than a gadget for content consumers. People belonging to the former will have a slightly better excuse at owning these phones compared to the latter. For casual users, any model above the iPhone X can still give you a good Apple experience (healthy gadget use and care considered). iPhones bought in 2019 onward can still rock a few solid years. For models purchased before 2018 (like the iPhone X and lower), you can start considering the 14 models. If you have the cash and are still using an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, the iPhone 14 series is a must. Which iPhone 14 should you get? The Pro models are the better phones on paper but not necessarily when taking into account user habits. If you see yourself watching TikTok videos and shooting a few food photos for Instagram, then the base models are more than enough. If you are in the game of providing content for your followers, most especially in video format—consider the 14 Pro as an investment. The Pro Max? Only if you’re over six feet tall with big hands. That thing is huge.

Apple cuts production of iPhone 14 Plus – YIKES! The move to cut production of the iPhone 14 Plus comes at a time when the global smartphone market has been softening. Apple Inc is cutting production of the iPhone 14 Plus within weeks of starting shipments as it re-evaluates demand for the mid-range model, the Information reported on Tuesday, October 18, citing two people involved in the company’s supply chain. The Cupertino, California-based company told at least one manufacturer in China to immediately halt production of iPhone 14 Plus components, according to the report. The move comes at a time when the global smartphone market has been softening, shrinking 9% in the third quarter compared with the same period a year earlier, according to estimates from data research firm Canalys, which expects weak demand over the next six to nine months.

The Plus is a welcome addition to the family Apple resurrected the “Plus” naming for the new iPhone 14 Plus. It is the same size as the 14 Pro Max (off by just fractions of a millimeter) and it claims the same 6.7” screen diagonal. It has effectively the same pixel density too (458ppi), making for a nice, sharp image. Apple iPhone 14 hot take However, that is where the similarities between the Plus and Pro Max end. For starters, it is still a 60Hz panel and it doesn’t support Always On Display (new on the Pros). Also, the Pro panels are brighter, the Plus and vanilla iPhone 14 keep the typical brightness at 800 nits and peak at 1,200 nits (vs. 1,000 nits typical and 2,000 nits peak for the 14 Pro duo).

The latest Apple iPhone 14 model had hundreds of people camping outside a mall in Makati City before it was released on Friday midnight. Nearly 200 people queued outside the Power Mac Center (PMC) in Greenbelt 3 Mall, with some even having spent the night lining up so they could be among the first to get their hands on the latest gadget. LOOK: customers wait in line outside an Apple store at a mall in Makati, some having spent the night queuing 1st person in line shared she lined up beginning 7am of Wed, Oct 12 Huge promos await for the first few customers to purchase iPhone 14 Customers that lined up said the gadget store distributed food while they waited. Zack Tabudlo and Sarah Geronimo performed at the launch to keep iPhone buyers entertained. The latest Apple phone, the cost of which starts at P61,000, can make most people assume that the eager throng of customers consists of individuals raking in cash. But on the contrary, the man at the very front of the line is a blue-collar worker who pinched pennies for more than a year. “Sales lang ako. Pangarap ko maka iPhone. Tiniis ko po budget budget para makabili bago. Kasi love ko talaga,” Joey Reyes, a mall staff in Manila said. “Tipid talaga: pagkain, pamasahe, at gastusin. 'Yung mga kaibigan sa trabaho nanghihingi lang ako ulam. 'Yung pang bili ng ulam nilalagay ko sa alkansya ko. Minsan nakiki-angkas sa katrabaho. Nag-ambag din ibang kaibigan ko.” Joey, a sales staff for a mall in Manila, is the first person in line. He was also the first person to purchase the iPhone 11 at the Makati branch in 2019. Unfortunately, that phone was stolen over a year ago. He had since been saving for a new one. pic.twitter.com/h8PrX0drRs — Anna Cerezo (@annacerezo_) October 13, 2022 Reyes revealed it was actually his second time to pioneer the line for the gadget at the branch. In 2019, he shared he was also the first to purchase the iPhone 11. But the latest model did not last in his pocket. In an unfortunate turn of events, Reyes said the gadget was stolen from him. “Yung cellphone ko 'yung una iPhone 11 nanakaw ... pauwi na ko malakas ulan. 'Di ko namalayan yung celphone ko nahablot na pala,” he recalled. Shopping shorts: Store openings, promos, and more The sales staff began waiting outside the store at around 7 a.m. on October 12, making his total waiting time around 41 hours. “Challenge sa madaling araw mainit at malamok. Mahirap 'yung tulugan na. Di naman pwede magdala kumot. Para makatulog ka maayos, nagdala ko ng carton,” he described. “Pero sulit … the best kasi iPhone 14 worth it. Magagamit ko 'yan sa trabaho.“ Reyes, however, clarified he did not only endure the heat and mosquitoes out of mere eagerness. “'Pag una ka sa pila May surprise ka. 'Di ko pa alam laman, pero may freebies,” he explained. Reyes, along with the first 50 customers, was given P28,000 worth of accessories from some of PMC's partner brands. Meanwhile, the 51st until the 150th customer were gifted P14,000 worth of freebies. The store also gave P10,000 worth of freebies to the succeeding 100 customers, while P5,000 worth of goods was granted to the 251st until 500th customers. According to the thrilled Apple enthusiast, the promo will greatly help his expenses. “Hahatiin ko. Bebenta ko iba sa kaibigan ko or ka trabaho o kakilala. Para makabawi,” Reyes noted. “Pangarap ko magka iPhone” A thrilled Joey Reyes claims the very first iPhone 14 to be sold at the Makati store (and one the first in the country) Reyes, a mall sales staff, lined up for 41hrs. He shared it took him more than a yea (and some generous friends) to save enough pic.twitter.com/FIdmRvUPjF — Anna Cerezo (@annacerezo_) October 13, 2022 Meanwhile, second in line was Reyes’ fellow mall staff Crystal Gracie. The saleswoman admitted she will be breaking the bank with the purchase, but nevertheless decided to indulge herself as she had longed for the Apple gadget since the iPhone 4s came out more than a decade ago. “Isis-wipe ng boss namin tapos babayaran namin boss ko. Mabait siya,” she gleefully explained. “First time ko bumili iPhone. Para maranasan man lang mag iPhone. Kita na maganda features lalo ngayon,” she added. 2nd in line Crystal Gracie, also a sales staff for a mall, shared her boss will initially pay for the iPhone but she will pay her back in tranches. It is her first time to purchase an apple phone and shared she had wanted one since iPhone 4 was released more than a decade ago pic.twitter.com/ycoWYHfba5 — Anna Cerezo (@annacerezo_) October 13, 2022 Dennis Joe, another first-time Apple owner, was sixth in line. Like Reyes, Joe had spent the night outside the store. And while the wait was long, the time he saved up for the latest model is even lengthier. “Mga inabot ng 3 years (mag-ipon),” he said. Joe had hoped to buy the earlier iPhone 11, 12 or 13 models in the previous years. The splurge, however, had to wait due to the fallout of the pandemic. “Nagluluto ako ng puto. 'Yung bentahan humina kasi kita ng business,” he noted. While it took the customers years before they were able to spoil themselves, the three early birds asserted they do not regret the wait as the latest model boasted new top-tier features. Customers can choose from the iPhone 14 (starts at P61,990), iPhone 14 Plus (starts at P68,990), iPhone 14 Pro (starts at P76,990), and iPhone 14 Pro Max (starts at P83,990). The iPhone 14 Pro Max comes with an “innovative 48MP camera for mind-blowing detail” and “is powered by the “ultimate” smartphone chip.

New Apple Leak Reveals iPhone 15 Release Surprise. Apple leaks have already claimed some surprising iPhone 15 upgrades are coming in 2023. But now a new report says that one of the most anticipated may not be released for several years. In a research note obtained by MacRumors, Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu reveals that Apple’s first in-house 5G modem is unlikely to be ready for the iPhone 15 launch. Moreover, the analyst says it may even miss the iPhone 16 launch in 2024. This news is a surprise given that Apple purchased Intel’s 5G smartphone modem business for $1BN back in July 2019, and Intel modems were already used in smartphones worldwide, including the iPhone 11 range. Yes, tests had shown them to be inferior to Qualcomm modems, but there was nothing to suggest a 5-year market absence would be required to make them more competitive. Moreover, the news is something of a blow for iPhone fans. Apple has long shown the benefits of its tightly integrated chips, and in-house Apple modems would be expected to deliver significant performance and power efficiency gains compared to Qualcomm’s off-the-shelf X-range, which is also used by most Android rivals. That said, it is not all bad news. While Qualcomm’s first 5G modems were criticized for their high power consumption, newer models have improved dramatically.

iPhones calling 911 from owners’ pockets on rollercoasters. Whuuuut! Apple’s newest phone has been automatically calling emergency services from the pockets of people riding rollercoasters in the US, mistaking the bumps and jerks of the rides as car crashes. The latest iPhone 14, as well as newer Apple watches, includes a feature that detects the signs and vibrations typical of a serious car accident – and calls 911 if the owner does not respond to a prompt to cancel. Since the new model went on sale in September, the Warren County 911 communications centre in Ohio received at least six crash-detection calls from people on rides, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. All of them were made automatically from Kings Island, an amusement park near Cincinnati that includes the Orion, a 91mph thrill ride that plummets more than 300ft (90 metres). Other alerts were also triggered by the 12-storey Joker rollercoaster at Six Flags Great America near Chicago, Illinois, the newspaper reported.
